There are so
many ways to
go when you travel
by rail. From
the fastest trains
in the world
to the unique
cogwheel railways
that take you
to the peaks
of Switzerland,
there's a train
journey that
will fit you
schedule.
For the leisure traveller, trains are about seeing the countryside,
recharging your
batteries in comfort
and arriving
in the heart
of the city ready to
start your adventure.
Whatever the
reason, travel
by train is comfortable,
convenient and
flexible.
Rail Passes
Rail passes are a flexible, convenient
way to travel
because you can
decide
where
to go within
the rail network
during your journey
without making
bookings
beforehand.
Rail passes are
also great value
because they
provide unlimited
rail trips for
the
number of
travel
days indicated
on the pass.
You should purchase
your rail pass
before you leave
because many
are not available
for purchase
overseas. You
must validate
your pass before
you
first train
ride in Europe
and the UK within
the pass validation
period. This
also
applies
if a ferry
is the first
leg of
your journey.
Point to Point Tickets
Eurail Point to Point tickets
are good for
a single journey
from one destination
to
another.
Tickets
are
valid for
2 months from
the first
day of validity
that you
nominate, and you can
break your
journey over
several days
as long as
you continue
on the same
route.
Class of travel
Usually,
two classes
of travel are offered, 1st and 2nd Class. 1st Class is
more
spacious with
fewer seats per
compartment / car.
Seats are wider
and offer
more
legroom and
luggage space
than
2nd Class.
Reservations
A Rail Pass
or Point to Point
ticket will
allow you to board
a train but
will not
guarantee
you a seat.
By making a reservation,
you are ensured
a place on
a specific train
at a specific time
and date. Reservations
are compulsory
on Premier and
high-speed trains
but are not required
on
most local
and regional
services.
Seating
The seating
confirguration
on the trains comes in 2
forms:

a corridor
on one side of the train.

1st Class
and 8 in
2nd Class.

seats on either
side of a central
aisle. In 1st
Class there are
usually 2 seats
on one
side of the aisle
and 1 on the other.
In 2nd Class
there are usually
2 seats on both
sides of the aisle.
Premier Trains
Premier trains
combine the
romance of train travel
with the lastest
in technology
and emenities
to get you there
quickly in comfort
and style. On
board amenities
include
restaurants,
bistros
and
bars with some
trains providing
telephones, laptop computer
outlets and audio
visual
facilites.
Some 1st class
services include a meal
served at your
seat.

- On board
special services (eg.meals)
- Ferries (you
must pay for
port taxes,
high season surcharges,
and for the use
