|
| From our base at Argens, the
Canal du Midi winds gracefully through a typically Mediterranean
landscape: vines, cypresses, pine trees and a riot of flowers
exude their glorious aroma whilst cicadas and crickets
shrill all around. Shaded by plane trees you will journey
from town to town, each with its tale to tell from an eventful
history.
Carcassonne,
Béziers, Narbonne and many others
invite you to taste mouthwatering regional specialities
and such unusual wines as Pacherenc, made from late-picked
grapes. To see on the skyline the towers of Carcassonne
is a heart-stopping moment, so formidable are the fortifications
restored by Viollet le Duc and now granted World Heritage
status by UNESCO.
LOCKS:
Most of the locks on the Canal du midi are automatic
with the help of lock keepers. On the Canal de la
Robine, the locks are automatic and without
lock keepers. In
HS, they are open from 9 to 12.30am and 1.30 to 7pm.
Until 6pm in LS. Closed on the 1st of May. The étang
de Thau cannot be crossed when the wind force is higher
than 3 beaufort. On the Lez and Canal du Rhône à Sète,
the few locks are automatic. Please note: the lift
bridge at Frontignan is only opened for a few minutes
twice
a day (8.30am and 4pm). |
